Why I Write Genre Fiction

I just read a lovely book.  The female protagonist was strong and ambitious.  The male protagonist was handsome and brave.  It was your standard 'girl meets boy, falls in love, gets tortured, loses her family to death or depravity, and lives happily ever after.'  It reminded me why I write romance novels.

Kind and generous characters don't die senselessly.
Parents never torture their children.
The handsome hero's morals are never in question.
Throughout it all, you never doubt that at the end, girl and boy will be alive and intact and in love.

While I appreciate the art and ambition of literary fiction, I would rather tell a safe tale of hope and compassion where the worst villains are brain-eating zombies and usually not my protagonists' parents.
